Ministry Trip to Tanjong Uban, Bintan (4-5 November 2006)

A CVC team first visited Bintan Island on 2-3 September. On the first day of that trip the team ministered to churches in Tanjong Pinang, a town in the south of the island. The team also ministered at a church, Gereja Kristian Khemah Daud (GKKD) in Tanjong Uban in the north-west of the island on Sunday. During this trip we linked up pastors from 19 churches in Tanjong Uban that were open to working with us. These churches are generally smaller churches, and it was agreed that CVC could be a blessing to them. Our focus on ministering in the power of the Holy Spirit, and that the teachings that we emphasise in our Spiritual Growth Seminars was very much needed in Bintan.

Following this, another trip was made to Tanjong Uban on 4-5 November. The team consisted of four members, namely Pastor Henry Tan, Brother Jesudas Menon, and Sisters Rachel Yew and Jessica Wong. We left on the first ferry from Singapore to the Bintan Resort Ferry Terminal at Lagoi, and were met by Pastor Diman of the GKKD. After checking into a small but comfortable hotel, and a light lunch, we were wisked off to the GKKD church premises, where we met up with about 20 of the local pastors and leaders. We thank Dr. Horas Tobing, the Senior Elder of GKKD and the elected MP for convening this meeting.

Uban6.jpgBrother Jesudas briefly shared on the ministry of CVC and what we could do to help the churches here. Pastor Henry then shared a vision of transforming the community here in Tanjong Uban by transforming the people, and tied this to a message on how Ezra-Nehemiah transformed a defeated community by first building the altar (commitment), then the temple (our individual lives, the temple of the Holy Spirit), then the walls (united prayer) and finally the word. This was followed by a time of dialogue where the pastors responded very positively to the word and the vision to “transform the community by transforming individuals”, culminating in a time of prayer, where the majority of the pastors came forward to kneel down in unity, asking for revival and transformation in Tanjong Uban. As a result the meeting ended later than scheduled, and we had just enough time to return to the hotel for a quick shower and change. Nevertheless we were late for the GKKD leaders prayer meeting and had to publicly apologise for being late! This church tries to inculcate good values in its leaders by making all latecomers apologise and promise to be punctual in future meetings! It's a good practice, and it works – we and our hosts were the only ones late! The prayer meeting was well attended and very lively, and we felt very much at home. Pastor Henry shared a word on Persevering Prayer. At the end of the meeting, the CVC team ministered to all present, and flowed freely in the gifts of prophecy and word of knowledge, as well as praying for the manifold needs. That meeting ended late too, but we all felt good. You get refreshed as you minister in the presence of the Lord.

Uban3.jpgThe next day we ministered in church. Being the first Sunday of the month there was a combined communion service and the hall was packed, and a little hot. The worship was excellent and we all enjoyed ourselves. Pastor Henry brought a word on Shattering Strongholds of Past Failures, of Bitterness and Unforgiveness, and of a Lukewarm Spirit. This was followed by communion led by Dr. Horas Tobing. The service was then ended to allow those who had to return to their factory dormitories to do so, whilst the team ministered to those who could stay and wanted prayer. Then it was off to good fellowship lunch with the pastors and some of the leaders, before heading off for the ferry terminal and a well earned snooze on the ferry trip back to Singapore.

We thank God for a very fruitful and enjoyable trip. His presence and favour was evident throughout the trip. We plan to make another trip to Tanjong Uban in February or March next year after the Joan Hunter Meetings.
